What is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic Manipulative Therapy, or an
“adjustment” is a procedure that relieves restrictions of the joints by working to relax the muscles, ligaments, and
tendons of the body. Regular
Chiropractic care is beneficial because it restores normal motion/function to the
joints. This promotes health, reduces the risk of injury, and may slow the
progression of degeneration due to biomechanical faults. It can also reduce
feelings of fatigue and promote the state of well-being.
Chiropractors treat the body as a whole, using a holistic approach. This means
working with the patient’s own body to try to heal from within to achieve
optimal function.
Over time, poor posture, injury, and aging can alter the biomechanical function
of the body. This can result in degeneration of the joints (arthritis) and formation of scar
tissue. These changes can cause pain and decreased flexibility, which limits
normal joint motion. The spinal column, which houses the spinal cord, (Central
Nervous System/CNS) regulates all of the functions of the body. Restrictions in
joint motion, especially the spine, can result in irritation or inflammation.
This can inhibit the flow of information between the CNS and the rest of the
body. When this occurs, optimal function of the body becomes compromised.
Dr. Debra Serlin
I believe it is important to treat
the body as a whole by using a holistic approach. This means working with the
patient’s own body to try to heal from within in order to achieve optimal
function. After conducting a thorough history and physical examination, I work
with the patient towards resolving problems using a natural approach. I feel it
is important for the doctor and the patient to form a partnership on the road to
recovery. This means the patient receives treatment in the office as well as
education and tools, such as exercises and stretches they can perform on their
own, so they may work towards achieving optimal function.
I earned my Doctorate degree in
Chiropractic from Western States Chiropractic College in 1999. I have since
studied with the Upledger Institute for advanced training in Craniosacral
Therapy. I have also studied with the Spine Research Institute in San Diego
with a focus on automobile crash related injuries. I have been trained in
Diversified Technique, Craniosacral Therapy, and postural rehabilitation. I have
practiced chiropractic in Portland, Oregon since 2000. I have also worked as a
Clinician’s Assistant in the
Outpatient Clinic at Western States Chiropractic
College for one year where I helped supervise senior interns in patient care.
Craniosacral Therapy
Craniosacral
Therapy is a light force technique that releases restrictions and imbalances in
the craniosacral system. It can be effective in treating a variety of conditions
including migraine headaches, Temporomandibular Joint syndrome (TMJ), chronic
neck and back pain.
